In the front bar of the local pub in a small country town
a bloke tells a ripping yarn to his mate and the barmaid. The
tale is full of adventure, history, opinion, local knowledge,
and peppered with jokes and gags galore. His impersonations
of characters and events are hilarious and his mate and the
barmaid laugh with recognition. Locust plagues, economic downturns,
sub soil moisture, vicious rumours, family hassles and, of
course, the bloody drought.
“BURNT” was born and bred out
of the true stories of people from regional Australia struggling
with prolonged dryness, and in particular how the stresses
and strains of continued drought impacts on families and young
people. The play is inspired by that “bush story telling” quality
and the Zeal Theatre style of performance aims to be like that
bloke telling a story to his mates in the local bar.
“BURNT” is Zeal Theatre’s
41st production and celebrates the company’s 20th year
since its establishment in 1989. It is the 4th commission by
the Sydney Theatre Company (after “GRONKS”, “AUSTRALIA
V SOUTH AFRICA” & “TABOO”)
and is the first since Zeal became an associate company with
the STC at the beginning of 2009.
LENGTH: 90 MINUTES.
AUDIENCE SUITABILITY:
High school students and adults.
